  • Duration: 8 Hours (approx.)
  • Location: CANTERBURY

Leave the city behind and journey into the heart of the Southern Alps on this unforgettable day tour to Arthur’s Pass. From quirky roadside attractions to soaring mountain peaks, this small-group experience is packed with stunning scenery, local flavour, and iconic Kiwi landscapes.

Your adventure begins with a relaxing drive west from Christchurch, through the rich farmland of the Canterbury Plains. Your first stop is the friendly rural town of Darfield, known for its welcoming atmosphere and delicious local bakery—perfect for a morning treat. From there, we continue to Springfield, home of the famous giant pink doughnut, a fun and unexpected photo stop inspired by The Simpsons.

The journey then winds into the foothills of the Southern Alps, where you’ll enjoy a peaceful tea break at Lake Lyndon—a remote alpine lake surrounded by rugged hills and wide-open skies. Breathe in the crisp mountain air as you soak in the serenity of this hidden gem.

From here, we ascend over the spectacular Porters Pass, offering sweeping views across the valleys and peaks, before arriving in the alpine village of Arthur’s Pass. Nestled among towering mountains, this region is home to native beech forests, dramatic gorges, and cheeky alpine parrots called kea.

In Arthur’s Pass, you’ll have time to explore the area with your guide. Choose from a range of short walks, or join an optional guided hike to the awe-inspiring Devils Punchbowl Waterfall—a 131-metre cascade that plunges down a lush, moss-covered cliff. It’s a powerful and photogenic spot that rewards those who take the trail.

Optional Upgrade – TranzAlpine Scenic Train
For an even more memorable experience, upgrade your tour to include a one-way journey on the world-renowned TranzAlpine Train. Instead of driving from Christchurch, you’ll be transferred to the railway station to board this iconic train. Sit back and relax as you cross the Canterbury Plains, pass through spectacular river valleys, and climb into the mountains via stunning viaducts and tunnels. Your guide will meet you at Arthur’s Pass to continue the day’s adventure. (This upgrade replaces the road journey to Arthur’s Pass; all other inclusions remain the same.)

After exploring the alpine region, the tour continues to Castle Hill / Kura Tāwhiti, a sacred Māori site and geological marvel known for its massive limestone boulders. Wander among these ancient rock formations, which rise mysteriously from the landscape like the ruins of a forgotten civilisation.

On the return journey to Christchurch, you’ll pass through the village of Springfield once more, reflecting on a day of breathtaking sights, fresh mountain air, and a deeper connection to Aotearoa’s stunning natural heritage.
