2-Day Alpine Skills Course
This immersive two-day alpine course is designed for beginners and aspiring mountaineers looking to build a solid foundation in alpine travel and safety. Set in the stunning Craigieburn Range near Arthur’s Pass, the course focuses on developing essential skills for safe mountain travel in New Zealand’s alpine environment.
Day 1 introduces participants to core alpine equipment and techniques, including ice axe use, crampon walking methods, self-arrest skills, and basic movement in snow-covered terrain. After a day of hands-on learning at Mt Cheeseman, the group will retreat to a lodge in Arthur’s Pass for a session on alpine trip planning, including route selection, interpreting guidebooks and maps, and understanding NZ's mountain grading system.
Day 2 puts newly learned skills into practice with a guided attempt to reach a peak or high point in the Craigieburn Range. The day includes lessons in safe travel, avalanche avoidance, and emergency shelter techniques, providing a real-world context for alpine decision-making.
Whether you're preparing for future mountaineering objectives or simply looking to explore New Zealand’s backcountry with confidence, this course offers a comprehensive and practical introduction to alpine travel.
