2-Day Navigation & Bushcraft Course
This hands-on two-day course is designed for trampers, hunters, and outdoor enthusiasts looking to build confidence navigating off-track terrain and moving comfortably in New Zealand’s backcountry. Set in the beautiful Craigieburn Forest Park, just west of Christchurch, this course provides practical training in map reading, compass use, GPS navigation, and essential bushcraft skills.
Day 1 begins with a gear check and discussion on selecting the right outdoor clothing and equipment for backcountry travel. Participants are introduced to the NZ Topo50 mapping system, learning how to read contours, identify key landforms, and use grid references. Through a mix of instruction and practical fieldwork, you'll begin developing your navigation skills—orienting maps, estimating time and distance, and planning off-track routes. The day ends with a series of “navigation legs,” where participants take turns leading the group to pre-set destinations using maps and GPS.
Day 2 builds on these foundational skills with a deeper focus on compass techniques, including field bearings, resections (triangulation), and navigating through open terrain and light bush. A second set of navigation legs helps reinforce decision-making and route-finding in real-world conditions. The day concludes with a discussion of emergency scenarios and what to do when things don’t go according to plan—critical knowledge for safe travel in remote areas.
Whether you're new to backcountry navigation or looking to refresh your skills, this course offers a supportive, small-group learning environment to build confidence and competence in the outdoors.
