2-Day Rock Climbing Course
This practical, two-day rock climbing course is perfect for beginners and climbers looking to build a strong foundation in sport climbing and rope systems. Set in one of Canterbury’s local climbing areas, the course introduces essential climbing techniques, safety practices, and equipment knowledge in a supportive and hands-on learning environment.
Day 1 begins with an introduction to climbing gear and safety systems, including how to inspect and maintain equipment, understand the New Zealand rock climbing grading system, and read a climbing guidebook. You’ll learn key rope skills such as tying in, belaying with an ATC, and effective communication through climbing calls and buddy checks. The rest of the day is spent on the rock, where you’ll get familiar with top rope climbing and begin refining your climbing technique—focusing on body positioning, footwork, and effective use of handholds. You’ll also be introduced to lead climbing concepts and clipping practice.
Day 2 dives deeper into climbing systems with a focus on anchors and lead climbing. You'll learn how to build both sport and top rope/y-shape anchors, practice lead belaying, and have the opportunity to experience lead climbing on real rock. The course also covers how to clean a climb and safely transition to being lowered off a route, allowing you to retrieve your gear from the top of a climb. With plenty of time on the rock, you'll continue refining your climbing movement and rope management throughout the day.
Whether you're just starting your climbing journey or looking to expand your skills for independent outdoor climbing, this course offers a comprehensive introduction to the techniques and safety systems essential for sport climbing in New Zealand.
