Your private day tour begins with a personal pick-up from your accommodation in Christchurch, the central meeting point, or directly from the port in Lyttelton. Sit back and relax as you’re whisked away toward the towering peaks of the Southern Alps on an unforgettable alpine journey.

The first stop is Darfield, a quaint country town where locals swear by the bakery’s famous treats—perfect for a morning snack. Then it’s on to Springfield, home to the quirky giant doughnut, a fun photo stop that adds a bit of humour to the day. From there, the landscape begins to transform as you reach the beautiful Lake Lyndon, a peaceful alpine lake where you’ll pause for morning tea and soak in the mountain air.

The drive climbs higher over Porters Pass, where dramatic views open up across the Southern Alps. Soon you’ll arrive in Arthur’s Pass village, nestled among rugged peaks and ancient forests. Whether you’re after a relaxed stroll or a more active experience, your guide will tailor the visit to suit your interests. A highlight for many is the optional guided walk to Devil’s Punchbowl Waterfall, where thundering water cascades 131 metres down sheer cliffs—an unforgettable sight.

Optional Upgrade – Travel by TranzAlpine Scenic Train
For a truly iconic New Zealand experience, choose to upgrade your tour to include a one-way journey on the world-renowned TranzAlpine Train. Instead of driving from Christchurch to Arthur’s Pass, you’ll board the train and travel through rolling farmland, deep river gorges, and mountain tunnels—one of the most scenic rail journeys on earth. Your guide will meet you at Arthur’s Pass Station and continue the tour from there. (This upgrade replaces the road journey to Arthur’s Pass; all other inclusions remain the same.)

After time to explore and enjoy a picnic-style lunch, your journey continues to the mystical Castle Hill / Kura Tāwhiti. These giant limestone formations feel like something from another world and offer incredible photo opportunities and the chance to explore a landscape sacred to local Māori.

As the day winds down, enjoy a relaxed return drive to Christchurch, filled with new memories, breathtaking photos, and the satisfaction of having experienced the very best of New Zealand’s alpine landscape—your way.
