Day 1: Scenic Drive, Nature Walks, Penguin Encounter at Sunset & Stargazing
Begin your adventure with a scenic journey from Christchurch into the stunning landscapes of the Banks Peninsula. Your guide will take you up the Port Hills, stopping at the Sign of the Kiwi for sweeping views over Christchurch and Lyttelton Harbour. Continuing along the picturesque Summit Road, we’ll pause at the Sign of the Bellbird before descending through Gebbies Pass into the lush countryside.
We’ll visit the tranquil Kaituna Valley Scenic Reserve for a short native bush walk and morning tea, surrounded by birdsong and greenery. From here, we head to the charming French-influenced village of Akaroa, where you’ll enjoy a relaxed café lunch and time to explore the waterfront.
In the early evening, we set out for the Pōhatu Penguin Tour—an unforgettable conservation experience in a secluded bay near Akaroa. You’ll get
the rare chance to see white-flippered penguins in their natural habitat and learn about the work to protect this special species.
After returning to Akaroa, if the skies are clear, we’ll cap off the day with guided stargazing, taking in the brilliance of the night sky far from city lights.
Day 2: Dolphin Cruise & Scenic Return to Christchurch
After a leisurely breakfast, we’ll head to the Akaroa jetty for a 2-hour dolphin-watching cruise. This scenic harbour tour is a highlight of the trip, with opportunities to spot the rare Hector’s dolphin, fur seals, white-flippered penguins, and a variety of native seabirds. Your guide will also share stories of Akaroa’s rich marine history.
Following the cruise, enjoy some free time for a coffee or a stroll before we begin our leisurely return journey to
Christchurch. Along the way, we’ll stop at scenic lookouts and visit the creative rural town of Little River, known for its art gallery, quirky shops, and local cafés.
We’ll arrive back in Christchurch by late afternoon, ending your two-day tour filled with stunning views, rare wildlife, and unforgettable experiences.
